Methodology for determining foliar penetration of herbicides with reference to oil-based adjuvants
1994
Oils are used extensively in pesticide formulation and in pesticide application as spray adjuvants. They improve the biological efficacy of several foliage-applied herbicides without impairing their selectivity. Beneficial effects were first observed with atrazine in maize (Zea mays; Jones and Anderson 1968; Nalewaja 1968) and with phenmedipham in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris: Miller and Nalewaja 1973). More recently, oils have met with success as spray adjuvants for graminicides (Buhler and Burnside 1984; Nalewaja 1986; Barrentine and McWorther 1988) and for bentazone (Doran and Andersen 1975; Nalewaja et al. 1975). Since they allow the use of reduced herbicide application rates, oils also im…
Evaluation of different conditions to enhance the performances of Lactobacillus pentosus OM13 during industrial production of Spanish-style table oli…
2017
The main objective was to set up a methodology to improve the high volume production of green table olives, cv. Nocellara del Belice. Lactobaccillus pentosus OM13 was applied during three different industrial processes of table olives as follows: trial one (IOP1) was subjected to an addition of lactic acid until a brine level of pH 7.0 was reached; trial two (IOP2) subjected to same addition of lactic acid as in trial one plus nutrient adjuvant; and trial three (IOP3) subjected to same addition of lactic acid as in trial one, but with the strain L. pentosus OM13 acclimatized in brine for 12 h before inoculation. These trials were compared against two untreated controls (spontaneously fermen…
Adjuvant chemotherapy and relative survival of patients with stage II colon cancer - A EURECCA international comparison between the Netherlands, Denm…
2016
BACKGROUND: The aim of the present EURECCA international comparison is to compare adjuvant chemotherapy and relative survival of patients with stage II colon cancer between European countries.METHODS: Population-based national cohort data (2004-2009) from the Netherlands (NL), Denmark (DK), Sweden (SE), England (ENG), Ireland (IE), and Belgium (BE) were obtained, as well as single-centre data from Lithuania. All surgically treated patients with stage II colon cancer were included. The proportion of patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy was calculated and compared between countries. Besides, relative survival was calculated and compared between countries.RESULTS: Overall, 59,154 patients …
Expression of salivary biomarkers in patients with oral mucositis: evaluation by SELDI-TOF/MS.
2016
Objective: This study aims to evaluate changes in proteomic salivary profile of patients with oral mucositis after adjuvant cancer treatments. Materials and Methods: Samples were collected from patients after adjuvant cancer therapies, and were analyzed by means of SELDI/TOF. Patients were separated in two groups: patients affected by mucositis (MUCOSITIS) and patient without mucositis (NO MUCOSITIS). All patients were divided in function of the anticancer treatment: patients who had radiotherapy (MUCOSITIS RADIO), had not radiotherapy (MUCOSITIS NO RADIO), had chemotherapy (MUCOSITIS CHEMO), and those who had not chemotherapy (MUCOSITIS NO CHEMO). Statistical evaluation PCA (Principal Comp…
5-year analysis of neoadjuvant pertuzumab and trastuzumab in patients with locally advanced, inflammatory, or early-stage HER2-positive breast cancer…
2016
Summary Background In the primary analysis of the NeoSphere trial, patients given neoadjuvant pertuzumab, trastuzumab, and docetaxel showed a significantly improved pathological complete response compared with those given trastuzumab and docetaxel after surgery. Here, we report 5-year progression-free survival, disease-free survival, and safety. Methods In this multicentre, open-label, phase 2 randomised trial in hospitals and medical clinics, treatment-naive adults with locally advanced, inflammatory, or early-stage HER2-positive breast cancer were randomly assigned (1:1:1:1) to receive four neoadjuvant cycles of trastuzumab (8 mg/kg loading dose, followed by 6 mg/kg every 3 weeks) plus do…
VESTIGE: Adjuvant Immunotherapy in Patients With Resected Esophageal, Gastroesophageal Junction and Gastric Cancer Following Preoperative Chemotherap…
2020
Background: Perioperative chemotherapy plus surgery is one recommended standard treatment for patients with resectable gastric and esophageal cancer. Even with a multimodality treatment more than half of patients will relapse following surgical resection. Patients who have a poor response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy and have an incomplete (R1) resection or have metastatic lymph nodes in the resection specimen (N+) are especially at risk of recurrence. Current clinical practice is to continue with the same chemotherapy in the adjuvant setting as before surgery. In the phase II randomized EORTC VESTIGE trial (NCT03443856), patients with high risk resected gastric or esophageal adenocarcinoma …
Monitoring of rheologic variables during postoperative high-dose brachytherapy for uterine cancer.
2004
Oxygenation of tumor tissue has recently been assed an important prerequisite for the effectiveness of radiotherapy in cervical cancer. Hyperviscosity is a common phenomenon in malignancy and a cause of reduced oxygen transport capacity that would favour tissue hypoxia. Hemorheological variables were serially tested preoperatively, during four cycles of fractionated adjuvant IR192 HDR after loading radiation (HDR-AL) of the vaginal vault (weekly intervals), and 6 months postoperatively in patients with cervical (n=12) and endometrial cancer (n=26). Women who were scheduled for benign tumor surgery served as controls (n=29). Preoperatively, in cervical and endometrial cancer patients, mean …
Activation of MORs in the VTA induces changes on cFos expression in different projecting regions: Effect of inflammatory pain.
2019
Abstract Chronic pain is a worldwide major health problem and many pain-suffering patients are under opioid based therapy. Epidemiological data show that pain intensity correlates with the risk of misuse of prescription opioids, and other drugs of abuse including alcohol. This increased vulnerability to suffer Substance Use Disorders could be, in part, caused by functional changes that occur over the mesocorticolimbic system, a brain pathway involved in reward processing and addiction. Previous data in rats revealed that inflammatory pain desensitizes mu opioid receptors (MORs) in the ventral tegmental area (VTA). As a consequence, pain alters dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens (NAc)…
Short term quality of life with epirubicin-fluorouracil-cyclophosphamid (FEC) and sequential epirubicin/cyclophosphamid-docetaxel (EC-DOC) chemothera…

Abstract Background The recommendation for adjuvant dose-dense chemotherapy in high risk primary breast cancer is heterogeneous among guidelines. Understanding the impact on QoL is thereby a crucial factor, especially if the benefit is potentially low. This study aims to assess QoL as a secondary outcome in the prospective randomized multi-center ADEBAR trial. Methods QoL was assessed at baseline (t1), before cycle 4 FEC and cycle 5 EC-DOC (t2), 4 weeks after chemotherapy (t3) and 6 weeks after radiation (t4) using the European Organization for Research and Treatment for Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Core Questionnaire (QLQ-C30) and the Breast Cancer-Specific Module (QLQ-BR23). Ki-67 Expression as a Factor Predicting Recurrence of Ductal Carcinoma In Situ of the Breast: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
2018
Abstract Background Ki-67 is a marker of proliferating cells; in this meta-analysis we aimed to examine whether Ki-67 expression can predict recurrence rates of breast ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Materials and Methods This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Eligible articles were sought in MEDLINE up to April 30, 2017. Random effects (DerSimonian–Laird) models were used for the calculation of pooled relative risk (RR) estimates; meta-regression analysis was also performed. Separate analyses were performed according to Ki-67 expression cutoff levels, invasiveness of recurrence,…
